NBC5 reports that the Fort Worth Zoo is hosting their first Sensory-Friendly Day on February 8.
Zoo staff will make modifications for sensory-sensitive guests and the park will open early at 9:00 a.m.

Volunteer Pleads Guilty to Theft from Mansfield Youth Baseball Association
The Star-Telegram reports that a volunteer stole more than $295,000 from the Mansfield Youth Baseball Association.
Jennifer Sue Witteveen served as the organization’s treasurer for seven years. During this time she made unauthorized withdrawals and wrote fake checks.
Ms. Witteveen pled guilty to a first-degree felony theft charge and faces eight years in prison.

TeamConnor Event Raises Funds for Childhood Cancer

TeamConnor Childhood Cancer Foundation, located in Dallas, has shared their ninth annual Northwestern Mutual Clay Shoot was recently held at the Dallas Gun Club. The sold-out event raised $90,000 for childhood cancer research and programs implemented by TeamConnor.
Local media personality Mark Davis with 660-AM The Answer, and Randolph McGee, game warden and reality TV star from Lone Star Law, were guest speakers at the event.
TeamConnor has donated nearly $3 million to research institutions since it was founded in 2008, following the cancer diagnosis of four-year-old Connor Cruse of Frisco who lost his battle in 2009.
“Events such as this are important to bring awareness and raise critical funds for a disease that is taking the lives of our children,” said Tait Cruse, managing partner of Northwestern Mutual – Dallas. “This event aligns with Northwestern Mutual’s philanthropic commitment to provide funding for pediatric cancer research and resources needed to fight this disease. It’s an honor to have the community join us every year.”

Texas Women’s Foundation Annual Luncheon Raises Funds to Support Female Opportunities

Texas Women’s Foundation, located in Dallas, held its 34th Annual Luncheon, presented by The Dallas Mavericks, on November 14, featuring a conversation with New York Times Bestselling author of More Than Enough and former editor-in-chief of Teen Vogue, Elaine Welteroth.
This year’s luncheon, co-chaired by Janiece Evans-Page of Fossil and Virginia Rose-Harris of Texas Health Resources, brought together 1,500 business and philanthropic leaders who gathered to support Texas Women’s Foundation’s mission to advance the lives of women, girls and their families in Texas.
The luncheon raised $1.5 million to advance economic security and leadership opportunities for women and girls.

TeamConnor Event Raises Record Amount for Childhood Cancer

Team Connor Childhood Cancer Foundation, located in Dallas, has announced their annual the III Forks Golf Classic Auction & Dinner presented by Northwestern Mutual – Dallas raised a record $615,000 for the fight against childhood cancer.
“We had great community support which helped us surpass last year’s total amount raised,” said Joy Cruse, founder of TeamConnor. “As people learn more about the need for critical research, they are moved to help the kids battling this dreadful disease.”
More than 250 players came out to support the battle against childhood cancer at the golf tournament at the prestigious Gleneagles Country Club. Since 2008, TeamConnor Childhood Cancer Foundation has donated nearly $3 million to hospitals and research centers across the country including Cook Children’s Hospital in Fort Worth, Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, Dana Farber Cancer Institute; UT Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas; UCSF Benioff Children’s Hospital, University of Colorado Denver, and Children’s Health Dallas.

Public Interest Registry Purchased by Private Equity Firm
The Verge reports that the Public Interest Registry (PIR) will be acquired by a private equity firm, Ethos Capital. The PIR is a nonprofit organization which manages .org web domain names.
Additionally, the nonprofit ICANN, who oversees all domain names on the internet, has removed price caps for .org domain names.

Sons of the Flag, located in Dallas, held its sixth annual Stars & Stripes Luncheon, presented by the Clay Cooley Auto Group, on November 4, 2019, at Dallas Country Club. The luncheon featured First Sergeant Matt Eversmann, portrayed by Josh Hartnett in the film, Black Hawk Dawn.
The program featured a welcome by Pete Delkus, WFAA-TV chief meteorologist and Donald G. Graves, a 94-year-old Iwo Jima Marine survivor, who sang the national anthem.
First Sergeant Eversmann was the keynote speaker and told the harrowing story of the time in Mogadishu and how realistic the movie Black Hawk Down was. He told the audience, “It showed a true accuracy of urban warfare.” For his actions on the battlefield, Eversmann was awarded the Bronze Star Medal with Valor device along with many other accolades.
The event raised funds to support burn survivors with critical treatment and supplies, and to increase the number of trained burn surgeons.

United Way of Tarrant County Announces 2019 KERNEL Winners
The Fort Worth Business Press reports that the United Way of Tarrant County, located in Fort Worth, has awarded $50,000 to three finalists during its fourth annual KERNEL Live! Event. The competition is designed to foster collaboration and advance social innovation.
This year’s winners are:
First place, $25, 000 – Feel the Color
Feel the Color creates embroidered fabric tags with braille, alphabet lettering and symbols. These revolutionary tags enable the visually impaired, including those who are colorblind, the opportunity to feel the color of their clothes.
Second place, $15,000 – Tarrant County Furniture Bank Tarrant County Furniture Bank will provide a centralized location for furniture that social services agencies can turn to as a resource when assisting those transitioning out of homelessness.
Third place, $10,000 – Shared Housing Program The Shared Housing Program meets a need for affordable housing and supportive community for individuals overcoming homelessness and/or domestic violence; low-income families who are unable to afford market rent; and elderly homeowners struggling with living costs on fixed incomes.
