  • Aim for Safety Program Created at Cook Children’s Medical Center

    The Dallas News reports that a doctor at Cook Children’s Medical Center, located in Fort Worth, has started the “Aim for Safety” program at the hospital to prevent child gun injuries.

    Dr. Daniel Guzman created “Aim for Safety” program after encountering a 4-year-old patient in the emergency room who had been accidently shot and died.

    The program teaches parents and children gun safety techniques and includes a study where children are left in a room with non-functioning guns and parents observe their reactions. The study showed that 95% of the kids picked up the gun and looked into the barrel.

  • Young Black & Giving Institute Back Names Philanthropist of the Year

    The Young Black & Giving Back Institute has named Akilah Wallace as the 2019 Young Black & Giving Back Philanthropist of the Year.

    Ms. Wallace serves as Executive Director of Faith in Texas, a growing multi-racial, multi-faith grassroots movement of churches, mosques, synagogues, and laypeople united in values working together for economic, racial, and social justice.

    She also founded the first African-American giving circle in Texas – the HERitage Giving Fund at Texas Women’s Foundation, which has awarded nearly $30,000 in grants to Black women-led organizations.

  • Fort Worth Firefighter Charities and Cook Children’s Provide Stop the Bleed Training and Supplies

    CBS 11 reports that Fort Worth Firefighter Charities and Cook Children’s Medical Center have partnered to provide training and 3,000 bleeding control kits to Fort Worth ISD schools in case of emergencies.

    The program is called “Stop the Bleed” and teaches participants proper bleeding control techniques including dressings, tourniquets and using hands to apply pressure.

    The kits contain emergency items including tourniquets, chest seals, compression bandages, bleeding control bandages, gloves and scissors.

  • JPS Hospital Has One of Busiest Emergency Departments in Nation

    D CEO Healthcare reports that John Peter Smith (JPS) Hospital, located in Fort Worth, has one of the busiest emergency departments in the country.

    JPS is the only level one trauma center in Tarrant County which means they treat all levels of serious injuries. JPS is expected to see 122,000 patients this year.

    The hospital plans an expansion for their emergency department in October of this year.

  • Black Men in White Coats Promotes Diversity in North Texas Doctors

    The Dallas News reports that Black Men in White Coats, located in Dallas, is working on increasing the number of young black men in the field of medicine.

    Their website includes a resource portal that supports young black students through a mentorship program and provides stories from successful health professionals and shares information about career-building opportunities.

  • Dallas County and Parkland Planning New Health Clinic in Former Red Bird Mall

    The Dallas News reports that Parkland Hospital System and Dallas County leaders are planning a comprehensive primary-care clinic in the former Red Bird Mall property.

    The plans will need approval from the Dallas County Commissioners and Parkland’s Board of Managers. The 40,000 square foot clinic is expected to open in 2020 in space formerly occupied by Dillard’s.

  • Texas Health Resources Announces $300M Expansion in Fort Worth

    The Fort Worth Business Press reports that Texas Health Resources has begun construction on its largest project. The Jane and John Justin Patient Surgical Tower is part of a $300M expansion in Fort Worth.

    The project will add 144 patient bed and a new pre-operative and post-operative services area to the Texas Health Resource Fort Worth campus.

    The expected completion date is 2021.

  • JPS Emergency Department Facing Record Overcrowding

    WFAA reports that John Peter Smith (JPS) emergency department has once again become overcrowded, causing the hospital to declare a Code Yellow for the second time in a month.  A Code Yellow means the hospital is in an overcrowding or disaster mode.

    Located in Fort Worth and serving Tarrant County, the emergency department is set to admit close to 11,000 patients in May. They admit 80 – 100 patients on a typical day. Their record number of visits in one day is 427 patients.

  • Baylor Scott & White Irving Foundation Selected as Park Place Showcase Beneficiary

    Baylor Scott & White Irving Foundation has been named as the beneficiary of the 3rd Annual Park Place Luxury & Supercar Showcase. Park Place has donated a vehicle for a raffle with the drawing to be held at the Four Seasons Resort and Club Dallas at Las Colinas on Saturday, September 28. Proceeds of the raffle will benefit the Baylor Scott & White Charles A. Sammons Cancer Center – Irving.

    “Supporting Baylor Scott & White Irving Foundation allows Park Place to give back directly to the local community that has embraced the event for the past two years,” said Liz Shafton, Experiential Marketing Director at Park Place Dealerships. “We are excited to introduce a raffle to the Park Place Luxury & Supercar Showcase that will allow one lucky winner to take delivery of a new car. Proceeds from the raffle also will work in tandem with the Four Seasons Resort and Club’s efforts to fund a CT Simulator, the Discovery RT, that is used for treatment planning on every patient who receives radiation therapy.”

  • TCU and UNTHSC School of Medicine to Integrate Technology into Teaching

    The Fort Worth Business Press reports Texas Christian University (TCU) and the University of North Texas Health Science Center (UNTHSC) Fort Worth School of Medicine has partnered with a leading online medical education platform to integrate technology into teaching.

    Instead of traditional lecture-based instruction, the new medical school will provide a technology-first approach to learning. Healthcare professionals will receive courses which focus on delivering compassion and empathy and innovative ways to reduce stress for the medical students.

    The new medical school will open in July 2019 in Fort Worth with 60 medical students.
