  • PurpleStride walk for pancreatic cancer set for Nov. 11 at Klyde Warren Park in Dallas

    Thousands are expected to walk to end pancreatic cancer, the world’s toughest cancer, at PurpleStride Dallas-Fort Worth on Saturday, Nov. 11. The community event presented by Bell Nunnally & Martin LLP is hosted by the Pancreatic Cancer Action Network (PanCAN) Dallas-Fort Worth Affiliate.

    PurpleStride events raise critical funds for the mission of the Pancreatic Cancer Action Network, and give local residents the opportunity to help make strides toward a better future, a press release stated. With every dollar raised for PurpleStride, another patient gets vital information and resources; another researcher gets a chance at finding an early detection tool or new treatment option.     PanCAN is dedicated to fighting the world’s toughest cancer. In its mission to save lives, we attack pancreatic cancer on all fronts: research, clinical initiatives, patient services and advocacy. It’s effort is amplified by a nationwide network of grassroots support.

    The five-year survival rate for pancreatic cancer is just 9 percent. Funds raised through the event support critical research, clinical initiatives and patient services, including Know Your Tumor®, Precision Promise,  Clinical Trial Finder and the Patient Registry.

    Harley Sterns, a pancreatic cancer survivor, has made it his personal mission to improve patient outcomes since joining the local affiliate in November 2013.

    “I realized that PurpleStride was a way to raise money and awareness for this terrible disease,” stated Sterns, the 70-year-old North Richland Hills resident, in the press release. “It is important to me and my family to help raise money for research so hopefully the life expectancy can increase and a cure can be found. I may not have a lot of time, but I will help however I can and continue to raise awareness for pancreatic cancer.”

    Texas – where more than 77,000 PanCAN supporters reside – has played an integral role in changing the course of pancreatic cancer. In fact, Texas-based researchers have received over 10 percent of the research grants PanCAN has awarded since 2003.

  • Former president and former first lady host Methodist Folsom Patron Party honoring David Miller

    Former President George W. Bush and former First Lady Laura Bush hosted the Methodist Health System Folsom Leadership Award Patron Party on Oct. 11 in the Presidential Reception Hall at the George W. Bush Presidential Center in honor of 2017 recipient David B. Miller. Miller is co-founder and managing partner of EnCap Investments and a community leader who supports numerous charities through the Miller Family Foundation.

    Miller will receive the prestigious award at a sold out dinner Wednesday, Oct. 25, at the Hilton Anatole Hotel’s Grand Ballroom. Established in 2005, the award recognizes individuals whose demonstrated commitment and excellence in community leadership emulate the achievements of the late Dallas Mayor Robert S. Folsom.

    In 2016, Methodist Health System provided more than $149 million in unreimbursed charity care, which represents a growing portion of total care provided in North Texas. The Folsom dinner, recognized as one of Dallas’s largest fundraising events, has raised more than $15 million net to benefit Methodist Health System’s programs and services.

    Past Folsom Leadership Award recipients include a who’s who in Dallas: the late Robert S. Folsom (2005), Nancy Ann Hunt (2006), Troy Aikman (2007), Laura Bush (2008), the late Norman Brinker (2009), Pat and Emmitt Smith (2010), Trevor Rees-Jones (2011), Mike Boone (2012), the Rev.     At the Patron Party, The Honorable Phillips welcomed the guests, followed by President Bush who thanked Methodist for honoring such a generous and good man.

    Miller then thanked President and  for hosting the patron party. He remarked on the award’s namesake, Bob Folsom, who lettered in four sports at SMU.

    “When I attended SMU, Bob Folsom was our role model.  He was a quintessential leader who was a highly successful business man, mayor of the City of Dallas, president of the DISD school board and an incredibly generous philanthropist. I’m honored to be receiving his namesake award. Carolyn and I are pleased to be connected with Methodist and its mission of providing caring and compassionate medical care, often times to the less fortunate, in this community. Thanks to all of you in attendance tonight for your very generous support, and I especially want to acknowledge and thank all the co-chairs who have done a remarkable job in making this event a success.”

  • The Cooper Institute’s annual Legacy Award Dinner will feature baseball great George Brett

    The Cooper Institute, a nonprofit health organization founded by Dr. Kenneth Cooper and based in Dallas, will host its annual Legacy Award Dinner at 6 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 2, at Globe Life Park in Arlington. This year’s event will feature an all-star lineup with event chair David Glass, Legacy Award recipient Drayton McLane, Jr., keynote speaker and Major League Baseball Hall of Famer George Brett along with moderator, Emmy Award-winning Kansas City Royals broadcaster Ryan Lefebvre.

    Longtime media personality Scott Murray will once again serve as master of ceremonies. The annual Legacy Award Dinner will raise funds to support the mission of The Cooper Institute to improve global population health with a particular focus on youth and raising a healthier generation.

     The annual dinner celebrates the mission of The Institute and honors leaders who have improved the lives and health of men, women and children across the country and around the world.     Brett is considered baseball royalty and was inducted into the National Baseball Hall of Fame in 1999. The 13-time All-Star had a career that transcended the baseball diamond.

    Broadcaster Lefebvre is in his 19th season with the Royals and his 23rd season in Major League Baseball.

    Both Brett and Lefebvre will participate in an interview session as the keynote presentation on Nov. 2.

  • Tour de Cure set for tomorrow at South Fork

    American Diabetes Association will host the annual Dallas-Fort Worth (DFW) Tour de Cure tomorrow at South Fork Ranch in Parker. The ride, run and walk will raise funds for research, programs and education that will help treat and prevent diabetes, find possible cures and improve the lives of those living with and affected by diabetes.

    The 2016 DFW Tour de Cure engaged more than 1,100 community participants to raise nearly $700,000 in support of the association’s mission, a press release stated.

     The event, which starts at 6 a.m. offers scenic, safe and well-marked routes for all ages and ability levels, including: a 5K walk/run and six cycling routes – three miles, 10 miles, 24 miles, 38 miles, 52 miles and 62 miles. Participants living with diabetes are encouraged to register as Red Riders and Red Striders to be celebrated the day of the event.

    It also features activities and entertainment for individuals from all walks of life, including Flight Zone, a family activities area and a photo booth. After completion of the walk/run and rides the celebration will continue through 3 p.m. as a community festival featuring complimentary food and beverages for participants, live music, family-friendly activities and much more. Community members not participating in the walk/run or rides are welcome to join in the fun at the community festival.

  • Cattle Baron’s Ball set for Oct. 21 at Gilley’s Dallas

    The 2017 Cattle Baron’s Ball is set for Saturday, Oct. 21, at Gilley’s Dallas. It will feature Brooks & Dunn on the main stage. Cattle Baron’s has raised nearly $70 million in the past 40 years toward the ongoing pursuit of a cure for cancer.

    Park Place Dealerships and  Cattle Baron’s have a 20-year relationship that will continue with this year’s event. The theme Shooting for the Stars: A Dream as Big as Texas, will see Park Place offer the winner of the raffle the choice between a 2017 Mercedes-Benz GLE, 2017 Volvo XC60 or a 2017 Porsche Macan with an estimated value of $58,000.

    Cattle Baron’s has provided more than 30,000 services to cancer patients in North Texas, rides to and from treatments, and wigs free of charge.   • Annual Outlive Yourself Awards benefit Taylor’s Gift Foundation

    Nearly 300 guests attended the 3rd Annual Outlive Yourself Awards on Sept. 28 at Union Station in downtown Dallas. The event was presented by Methodist Dallas Transplant Institute to benefit Taylor’s Gift Foundation.

    Journalist Kristi Nelson of NBC 5 served as honorary chair and master of ceremonies. She entertained guests throughout the evening with a lineup, including co-founders Tara and Todd Storch; Joe Winters, husband of Taylor’s a heart recipient, and Arnetta Wright, an organ transplant recipient.

    The evening honored Dr. Tiffany Anthony, a transplant surgeon at Baylor University Medical Center at Dallas, and Terri Maxwell, founder and CEO of Share On Purpose.

    Proceeds from the event support the mission of Taylor’s Gift – providing financial assistance to families who have given the gift of life. The organization’s Legacy Gift program was established to provide financial assistance to organ donor families. Assisting with needs such as burial expenses, utilities, rent and more, Taylor’s Gift Foundation works to help those who are facing immediate need.

    The Outlive Yourself Awards is an opportunity to celebrate those who have made an extraordinary impact and truly embody the “Outlive Yourself” spirit by giving back to others.   • Waxahachie teen hosts cancer fundraiser

    Five-year-old Isabella Day has been fighting stage IV neuroblastoma since she was only nine months old. Sadly, and surgery, chemotherapy and other treatments have been ineffective in controlling her cancer.

    So her 15-year-old sister, Anna, will host a bake sale from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday at the Chick-fil-A restaurant at 996 W. U.S. 287 Bypass in Waxahachie to raise money for childhood cancer research.

    September is Childhood Cancer Awareness Month.
