  • Emmitt Smith Celebrity Invitational Honors Dirk and Jessica Nowitzki

    Good Morning America’s Robin Roberts hosted the 10th Annual Emmitt Smith Celebrity Invitational in celebration of ten years of service, philanthropy and positive community impact for Pat & Emmitt Smith Charities in North Texas.

    Dallas Cowboys quarterback Roger Staubach and his wife, Marianne, served as Honorary Chairs with Mahisha and John Dellinger serving as the 2019 Event Chairs.

    Each year, the highlight of the evening’s program is the designation of awards bestowed upon community leaders who are leveraging their platforms to support others. The Roger Staubach Award recognizes sports and or entertainment professionals who positively impact the lives of children by living courageously and creating opportunities for today’s youth.

    Staubach personally presented this year’s honor to Jessica and Dirk Nowitzki in acknowledgment of the amazing work they have done through The Dirk Nowitzki Foundation, which lifts up children who are affected by illness, poverty, abuse and neglect through proper channels of guidance and directs them on a path to success.

    Now in its 10th year, the Emmitt Smith Celebrity Invitational has raised more than $9.2 million in support of Pat & Emmitt Smith Charities and supported over 150 charities in North Texas, including 10,000 DISD students and families through their annual back to school program.

    Giving Goods DFW shared their website will close on June 1. Funding challenges prompted the decision. Giving Goods connected area nonprofits to people donating goods and volunteers to serve.

  • Catholic Charities Fort Worth Partners with J.P. Morgan for Workforce Development

    The Fort Worth Business Press reports a new partnership has formed between Catholic Charities Fort Worth, J.P. Morgan Private Bank in Fort Worth and Tarrant County College District to address poverty and the middle-skills job gap in Fort Worth.

    The Fort Worth Chamber of Commerce recently shared research from J.P. Morgan which shows 22% of the Dallas-Fort Worth population aged 25 or older lack a high school diploma and a large number of people do not have basic academic and job readiness skills.

    This lack of skills is creating a gap in the job market for employees in the middle-skills range. J.P. Morgan is investing $7 million in programs to train the labor force in healthcare and advanced manufacturing and will also support programs to address poverty and education.

    Catholic Charities Fort Worth’s Stay the Course is a community college persistence program to ensure completion of an associate degree or certification from a community college. The program provides case management and emergency financial assistance.

    J.P. Morgan also invested in Tarrant County College to address workforce gaps. Tarrant County College uses the Catholic Charities’ caseworker model to assist students in completing their degree requirements.

  • Nonprofit Leaders Luncheon Series Hosted by Area Businesses

    Together with JPMorgan Chase Bank and Whitley Penn, Kelly Hart hosted the latest in a series of Lunch and Learns for Nonprofit Professionals at the Fort Worth Zoo on April 30, 2019.

    “The Future of Fundraising” was a panel discussion with guest speakers, including Missy Gale, President, M. Gale & Associates LLC; David Nolet, Market Manager J.P. Morgan Private Bank Fort Worth; J.R. Holland, Senior Director of Major Gifts, Texas Health Resources Foundation, and Dana Stayton, Partner and Chair Nonprofit Organizations, Kelly Hart. Moderating the discussion was Emily Landry, CPA, Tax Manager, Whitley Penn.

    The panel discussed topics, including generational giving, experiential selling, for-profit partnering, and board engagement. In attendance were more than 160 executives from 65 local nonprofit organizations.

    The next Lunch and Learn will be held in September 2019.

  • United Way of Tarrant County and Leadership Fort Worth Launch BoardBuild

    The Fort Worth Business Press reports a new nonprofit called BoardBuild is being formed to help nonprofits build better, well-trained boards. Led by the United Way of Tarrant County and Leadership Fort Worth, the new organization will strengthen communities through training and matching leaders with qualified nonprofit boards.

    The 2018 Leadership Class of Leadership Fort Worth studied the issues around the lack of support for nonprofit boards of directors and types of available training. This will also help in creating diversity in nonprofit boards as suitable board members are identified through BoardBuild.

    BoardBuild plans a soft launch in July and a hard launch in the fall.

  • Dallas Arboretum Debuts New Horticulture Center

    The Dallas Arboretum and Botanical Gardens dedicates the Tom and Phyllis McCasland Center which houses a greenhouse facility to establish and acclimate the many varieties of plants, florals and vegetables for the botanic gardens.

    For more than a decade, the Dallas Arboretum searched for appropriate land and greenhouse space, and in 2017 found it just seven miles away on an eight-acre parcel that straddles Dallas and Mesquite.  After preparing the land and installing approximately 17,000 square feet of climate-controlled greenhouses, the Dallas Arboretum dedicated the space on April 3.

  • Fort Worth Chamber and Facebook Co-Host Boost Your Business Event

    The Fort Worth Chamber of Commerce and Facebook hosted a free educational event on April 24 to focus on empowering entrepreneurs with the digital tools and resources they need to build their businesses.  About 200 small business owners attended the “Boost Your Business” event which was held at Fort Worth’s The 4 Eleven event center.

    Fort Worth Mayor Betsy Price and Fort Worth Chamber of Commerce Executive VP Brandom Gengelbach kicked off the event. They emphasized the value that small businesses have on strengthening the local economy.

    Mayor Price thanked Facebook for their commitment to the City of Fort Worth, and for celebrating and empowering the city’s entrepreneurs. She also gave a special recognition to Fort Worth Data Center team members and recognized Facebook for bringing their data center – powered by wind and solar energy – to the City of Fort Worth.

    The event featured a presentation by Facebook on how to use the platform to reach more customers. Following the event, attendees received one-on-one time with Facebook representatives to answer specific small business-related questions about the Facebook and Instagram platform.  

  • Boy Scouts of America Facing New Allegations of Sexual Abuse

    WFAA reports the Irving-based Boy Scouts of America is facing allegations that there may be as many as 8,000 Boy Scout leaders and volunteers accused of sexual abuse dating back to 1944. The alleged abuse happened over the past eight decades across the United States.

  • Abilene Woman’s Estate Contributes to Six Nonprofits

    KXTS 12 reports an Abilene woman’s estate donates $9 million to six nonprofits. During her lifetime, Ms. Jean Hays was involved with numerous organizations in the Abilene area.

    The executor of her will and brother, Mr. Frank Cahill, presented checks for $1.5 million each to the following organizations: Alliance for Women & Children, Christian Homes of Abilene, Community Foundation of Abilene, Ben Richey Boys Ranch, West Texas Rehabilitation Center and the Catholic Charities of San Angelo.

    Ms. Hays passed away in September 2018.
