Dallas Hispanic Bar Association honors Norma L. Garcia

Dallas Hispanic Bar Association recently named Norma L. Garcia its recipient of the 2017 Corporate Counsel Diversity Award. Garcia is associate general counsel – international legal affairs for Plano-based Rent-A-Center (NASDAQ/NGS:RCII).

The award was presented Oct. 28 at the DHBA’s Noche de Luz annual event for recognition of those who demonstrate a strong commitment to promoting diversity and inclusion within the legal field.

“It is an honor to be recognized by DHBA with this award,” Garcia stated in a RAC press release. “Diversity and women’s initiatives are important to me due to my experience with the lack of a female mentor and role model in the legal field to help me as I navigated my way through law school. I want to make sure that those who aspire to obtain a law degree have a network of support and guidance available to them.”

Garcia was chosen for her service as the co-chair of the Dallas Latina Leadership Program, a program geared toward engaging and developing Latina lawyers and law students. She serves as a commissioner on the Hispanic National Bar Association’s Latina Commission that’s mission is to advocate for Latina lawyers and law students and create programs that promote their advancement within the legal profession. Garcia also is one of the four founding members of RAC’s first Women’s Leadership Conference based on a program founded by women for women that began with mentoring circles within the company.

As associate general counsel, Garcia oversees the legal aspects for the company in Mexico and Puerto Rico as well as consumer litigation in the U.S. She began her legal career as an assistant district attorney in Collin County after graduating from Oklahoma City University School of Law.
