Texas Wesleyan has announced the Nick and Lou Martin University Center is nearly finished. The new 44,000 building will include gathering spaces for students, a new bookstore, dining options, and a campus career center.
The building is anticipated to be complete by late 2019.
The Dallas News reports Paul Quinn College is working on a new vision for their We Over Me Farm. In 2010, Paul Quinn College plowed its football field to create a farm. Since then, We Over Me Farm has produced over 30,000 pounds of produce to help the community. Paul Quinn College is located in a federally designated food desert and the college has helped bring a grocery store and farmer’s market to the neighborhood.
The college isn’t shutting down the farm yet but will announce their new plan for the farm next month.
UT Dallas has announced Brent Christopher, president of Children’s Medical Center Foundation, will receive the Ruth and Ken Altshuler Callier Award at the eighth annual Callier Cares Luncheon.
Mr. Christopher has served as president of Children’s Medical Center Foundation since 2016 and previously served as president and CEO of Communities Foundation of Texas.
The Ruth and Ken Altshuler Callier Care Award, created in 2012, is named for Dallas community leaders Ruth and Dr. Ken Altshuler who have made a difference in the lives of patients with communication disorders and their families. The Altshulers created the Callier Care Fund, which provides assistance to children and adults with hearing, speech and language disorders regardless of their income, insurance or socioeconomic background.
NBC5 reports TCU has awarded full ride scholarships to 50 North Texas Community Scholars. TCU began the Community Scholar program in 2000 with 12 awards.
KERA News reports on a new childhood development study, The Dallas Project on Education Pathways, that follows 300 minority families in North Texas. The University of Texas at Dallas’s Center for Children and Families oversees the study. The multi-year project studies childhood development and school readiness.
The Fort Worth Business Press reports that Communities in Schools of Greater Tarrant County has received a million-dollar gift. The donation from the Ramesh and Kalpana Bhatia Family Foundation will allow the nonprofit to serve thousands of at-risk students.
The Arts Council of Fort Worth launches a new three-part Workshop Series in spring 2019. Generously underwritten by Wells Fargo, these free half-day workshops will provide staff, volunteers, and board members of local cultural organizations with knowledge and skills that are critical for long term success.
Based on submissions to the Arts Council’s competitive Grants Program and conversations with local arts professionals, the Arts Council’s staff has identified three primary areas for growth: increased diversity across boards and staff, broadened financial literacy, and the development of targeted and impactful communications. The workshops will run March – May.
Tarleton State University has shared the Stephenville-based school has received a $1 million grant to launch a research project around fraud detection in health care claims.
The grant from Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Texas will allow researchers in Tarleton’s Analytics Institute to study health care claims and develop new ways to identify fraud using specialized software and systems.
Fox 4 News reports two Fort Worth grandmothers are working to establish a UNCF endowed scholarship for Tarrant County.
The historic African American charity has an established office in Dallas and assists North Texas families in Dallas County. Shirley Pace and Dr. Arlene Barnett are working to raise the $100,000 required to create a Tarrant County UNCF scholarship region.
TCU 360 has shared the TCU Music Center will be in the fall of 2020. The new center is designed to attract new students to the TCU music program. A $10 million philanthropic gift from donors will help honor the late pianist Van Cliburn’s impact on Fort Worth. Mr. Cliburn passed away in 2013.
