Common grant myth: “Faith-based nonprofits can’t apply for government grants”
This is one of the most common misconceptions we hear—and it’s simply not true.
Faith-based nonprofits have been eligible for federal, state, and local government grants for decades. The confusion often comes from not knowing where the boundaries are. The good news? The rules are clearer than many people expect.
Government agencies regularly fund programs led by faith-based organizations that address community needs—feeding families, providing shelter, supporting youth, strengthening neighborhoods, improving education, and more. These programs qualify because they focus on public benefit, not religious instruction or worship.
If your organization is doing community-focused work, the door to government funding has always been open. You just need to walk through it with a proposal centered on impact, outcomes, and accessibility.
