Funders Funding Opportunities

Young Black & Giving Back Institute promotes August national giving day

2021 marks the fourth year the Young, Black & Giving Back Institute (YBGB) will promote financial giving for Black-led and Black-benefiting nonprofits on August 28. Give 8/28 builds on the momentum created by Black Philanthropy Month with one concentrated day of giving for Black nonprofits, which leverages online fundraising tools in order to tap into the enthusiasm of the 21st Century philanthropist.

The mission of the Young, Black and Giving Back Institute (YBGB) is to educate, inspire, and empower young Black professionals, influencers, social entrepreneurs, and activists to effectively invest in changing their communities through philanthropy.

YBGB began in 2018 with 114 nonprofits and individuals raising $12,700. In 2019, more than 170 Black-led, black benefiting nonprofits raised more than $34,000. In 2020, over 470 nonprofits raised more than $250,000! In 2021, we aim to have at least 1,000 nonprofits and donors raise more than $500,000.

For nonprofits to participate in Give 8/28, YBGB requires that at least 50% of the leadership, board, AND staff are Black, thereby accurately reflecting the population you serve. So, “Black-led” is about the demographic makeup and racial identity of the leadership as well as a political purpose of building power to ensure that the Black community thrives.
