Women in Power Empowering (WIPE), a Tarrant County-based giving circle of Black women, are set to expand their impact this fall with a mixer event aligned with Black Philanthropy Month and “Give 8/28” – a national online giving event to support Black-led and Black-benefitting nonprofits.
In 2016, Nicole Henry, and Executive Director of a regional crisis center, brought together a small group of women with backgrounds in social work and nonprofit management who through their personal and professional experiences knew firsthand the need for direct support of women seeking better lives for themselves and their families in Fort Worth and surrounding communities. Within less than ten years, Women in Power Empowering has grown in membership size and philanthropic impact, providing thousands of dollars each year in financial assistance to women and girls in crisis and grants to local nonprofits that serve them.
“I know the impact giving can have in a person’s life. Without the support of individuals like my mom as a young single mother, I would not have overcome certain struggles. I understand that not everyone has a strong support system to assist when they fall on hard times,” said Sabrina Conner, WIPE’s board president.
Overall, WIPE has awarded more than $30,000 through its Empowerment Fund and Business Empowerment Fund, which help women to reach personal, educational, and professional goals, and its Women Impact Grant for Tarrant County nonprofits providing life-changing, direct services and resources.
Women in Power Empowering will host its annual Black Philanthropy Month fundraiser event on August 25, 2024, from 6:00pm – 8:30pm at Lost Oak Winery in Burleson. This year’s theme is “Amplifying the Brilliance of Black Women in Non-Profit Leadership,” and the featured speaker will be Nichole Henry, WIPE’s founder.
