  • Sons of the Flag Presents Burn Fellowship Grant to UT Southwestern

    Sons of the Flag, located in Dallas, has announced they have presented a $100,000 burn fellowship grant to UT Southwestern.  The fellowship will fund the education and training for a burn surgeon for one year.  Currently, there are fewer than 200 burn surgeons in the U.S. to treat the more than 486,000 burn survivors each year.

    Sons of the Flag has also signed a multi-year commitment to provide annual burn fellowship grants to UT Southwestern through 2023, which will enable more surgeons to be trained and then move into burn units locally and throughout the country.  Combined with prior grants to UT Southwestern and other hospitals including Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston and the University of Kansas Medical Center in Kansas City, this will take Sons of the Flag’s total burn fellowship funding to $1,000,000.

    Ryan “Birdman” Parrot, Sons of the Flag founder, president and CEO, said, “There is a critical need to increase the number of burn surgeons in the U.S. so that the specialized care and treatment burn victims need can be provided.  We are excited to make today’s grant to UT Southwestern and look forward to doing the same over the next several years.”

  • Sons of the Flag Holds Sixth Annual Stars & Stripes Luncheon

    Sons of the Flag, located in Dallas, held its sixth annual Stars & Stripes Luncheon, presented by the Clay Cooley Auto Group, on November 4, 2019, at Dallas Country Club. The luncheon featured First Sergeant Matt Eversmann, portrayed by Josh Hartnett in the film, Black Hawk Dawn.

    The program featured a welcome by Pete Delkus, WFAA-TV chief meteorologist and Donald G. Graves, a 94-year-old Iwo Jima Marine survivor, who sang the national anthem.

    First Sergeant Eversmann was the keynote speaker and told the harrowing story of the time in Mogadishu and how realistic the movie Black Hawk Down was. He told the audience, “It showed a true accuracy of urban warfare.” For his actions on the battlefield, Eversmann was awarded the Bronze Star Medal with Valor device along with many other accolades. 

    The event raised funds to support burn survivors with critical treatment and supplies, and to increase the number of trained burn surgeons.

  • Sons of the Flag Event Kicks Off Film Festival

    Sons of the Flag, a Dallas-based organization that supports military, veteran, and first responder burn survivors and their families through funding for innovative research, treatment and education, held its fifth annual Stars & Stripes Luncheon and Film Festival event presented by the Corrigan-Goddard Foundation on Thursday, November 8, 2018, at Brook Hollow Golf Club.  

    Former Green Beret Commander Mark Nutsch, portrayed by Chris Hemsworth in major motion picture “12 Strong,” was the keynote speaker at the luncheon which raised $250,000 for burn survivors and families

    “The Stars & Stripes Luncheon and Film Festival is our biggest annual event and it raises a substantial amount of funding for our work to support veterans, first responders and civilians with advanced burn treatment and education,” said Ryan “Birdman” Parrott, former Navy SEAL and founder of Sons of the Flag.  “As this year’s keynote speaker, former Green Beret Commander Mark Nutsch enthralled the audience with his account of one of the most unique and successful military campaigns in modern history and how our first soldiers in Afghanistan overcame seemingly insurmountable odds.  His words reminded us that we must continue our efforts on behalf of others trying to overcome their own seemingly insurmountable odds–burn victims.”

    Sons of the Flag is a nonprofit organization committed to supporting military, veteran, and first responder burn survivors and their families by providing funding for innovative research, technology and education. They bring together passionate community leaders, pioneering physicians, experienced military service members, dedicated first responders and purposeful civilians to complete their mission.
