United Way of Tarrant County (UWTC) announced the appointment of Bill Johnson as director of its Mission United program, which connects veterans, active duty military members and their families living in 256 Texas counties to health care, housing, education and employment resources.
Mission United, an initiative of United Way of Tarrant County, holistically addresses issues faced by veterans, military members and their families. The network of 120 partners provides comprehensive physical, emotional, mental and financial assistance to foster greater long-term self-sufficiency. In 2023, Mission United spearheaded efforts to connect more than 35,000 individuals across the State of Texas to health care, housing, education and employment resources.
Currently, all members of the Mission United team have a direct connection to the military, either as a veteran themselves or as a military spouse. Johnson, himself, is a U.S. Army veteran, as well as a Purple Heart recipient. Following his retirement from the military in 2014, Johnson served as the CEO for the First Command Educational Foundation and program manager for Merging Vets and Players in Dallas.
“We are fortunate to have someone with Bill’s background joining our team,” said Regina Williams, UWTC’s executive vice president and chief impact officer. “His experience as an active duty military member and his expertise gained while working to support veterans position him for success as he develops the strategic direction for the Mission United program.”
Throughout his career, Johnson has consistently demonstrated strong leadership in program development, regulatory compliance and talent acquisition/retention. He excels in managing and integrating cross-disciplinary teams, driving community engagement and fostering organizational growth.
“I want to expand how we serve veterans in our community and become the model for how we should care for those who served and protected,” Johnson stated. “This role allows me to work for an outstanding organization while dedicating myself to my passion for serving veterans and their families.”
Johnson holds a Bachelor of Science in Liberal Arts from Excelsior University in Albany, NY. He also completed the Sergeant’s Major Course at the U.S. Army Command and General Staff College in Fort Bliss, TX.
